ARTIST STATEMENT

Much of my work explores the fantasy surrounding the American West. The cowgirl is often the muse of my work, as she seems to be comfortable with all sides of herself: a fully realized “masculine” and a fully realized “feminine” . Each piece is grounded in a familiar scene, reimagined in a way that explores spirituality, identity, and the duality of peace vs chaos. My practice consists of layered photo collages, painting and other mixed media projects. Inspiration comes from treasure hunting: vintage photos, cherished objects and special places act as the main characters of the stories I am telling. I look for subjects that are open to a new narrative and have the composition and quality to be resurrected into something modern and vibrant. The works use postmodern techniques of appropriation and deconstruction to create something more optimistic, nostalgic and hopeful.
